Project Description

PROJECT SUMMARY

I had a few clients who wanted to do large construction projects with me so I decided to break away from Stewards group during a slow period and start my own business.

I primarily did gardens, kitchens and bathrooms.

I subbed out licensed trades, and focused on customer relations, sales and design. I accomplished dozens of projects from quick fixes to extensive remodels.

LESSONS LEARNED

This was my first business venture. I was guided through branding, business formation, and client relations by my then mentor - Bob. I learned allot over these years about business, even though my contracting competencies did not improve.

There were also some glaring holes in my administration skills. I had issues related to accounting, cashflow, and legal/tax compliance.

At the time all I wanted to do was to sell and build cool projects, so all the other stuff seemed like a distraction to me. I have learned that I need to build a team around me to help supplement my administrative needs so that I can focus on where my personality really shines.

FIRM DESCRIPTION

Signet Builders specialized in home remodels in San Francisco. We emphasized functional design that is tailored to customer lifestyle desires. We worked in general construction activities, and specialized in backyards, kitchens, bathrooms, and masonry applications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Project Management

  • Sales, Marketing

  • Some Construction Activities, coordinating sub contractors

ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE

  • Starting my own profitable business at 22 years old

  • Extensive list of happy clients

  • Journeyman level trade knowledge in plumbing, electrical, masonry

WHY I MOVED ON

The two biggest factors in me leaving trade work was that during this time the economy went through a major recession. I was advised by my mentors to return to school as it was a bad period for real estate development. I then started at San Francisco State University in an Urban Planning program. I still did side jobs, and some other major projects like political campaigns.

When I was 25 I was also involved in a major motorcycle accident which necessitated me moving out of construction labor which made it impractical for me to return to Signet Builders, or construction in general.
