Project Description

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Still considered to be my favorite job, In-N-Out Burger has had a lasting and formative impact on my life.

I was one of the first employees at the In-N-Out Daly City location, which was only a few blocks from my childhood home. During their initial employment drive I waited with hundereds of other potential hires at a nearby hotel to be interviewed. My permanently goofy grin and unnecessarily polite demeanor won the day, I was the epitomy of their model employee.

My personality came alive here. It is a highly social environment, and the repetitive tasks de-emphasize any need for focused attention which left plenty of room for day-dreaming and good conversations.

I was one of the few but prized fry guys at this location. This position included shucking potatoes, cooking the fries, and distributing them to individual orders. The position was so repetitive that I would dream every night about making fries for eight ours after making fries for eight hours. I don't eat fries anymore.

I also gained 20 pounds and developed smile lines.

When I retire I would like to work at In-N-Out again for the free meals, good times, and because I look great in a uniform.

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • First Job - Achievement Unlocked!

  • Fresh produce and food preparation - useful skill for preparing lunches

  • Cash register experience - because you can never have too much practice in arithmetic

  • Customer relations and problem solving - I put this one in because I needed to pad my early resume. Do you know how hard it is to find a job with only In-N-Out on your resume?

IN-N-OUT VERNACULAR

"Right on." Was the only way to affirm that a message was heard. It was never expressly taught to new hires, but within days of being hired I knew that it was the only way to say "OK," or "Yes."

"5 Fry down, Right on."

"Ice Cart, Right On."
